Robert's Story

Earth Camp Commitment

My earth camp commitment is to not use plastic disposable water bottles. Plastic water bottles are very easy to use but they hurt the environment and actually cost much more money than to just use tap water. I want to help my family and I produce less waste by using reusable water bottles.

Because of my Earth Camp commitment, there will be less plastic waste and the earth will be polluted a lot less. I will also not be giving my money to companies who sell plastic water bottles.  Saving my money and not using plastic is a win-win for me and the planet.

The beautiful river will remind me to keep our earth clean and use reusable water bottles.  Every time I think of the rafting down the river, I will remember that it is very important to use a reusable water bottle, instead of plastic.

Questions & Answers

What did you think camp would be like and did it turn out that way or differently?

I thought that camp would include a lot of driving and sightseeing. I also knew that there would be a little bit of backpacking but I was most looking forward to the river trip. Camp turned out to be pretty fun but it still included a lot of driving and sightseeing. There was also a lot of involved lessons about the river and geology. The river trip turned out to be a lot of fun and the guides turned out to be amazing.

What was your favorite activity and why?

My favorite activity was the no waste dinner because we had a lot of fun trying to order food with no waste.  We learned a lot about how much resources are wasted when we order a meal when eating out.

What did we do at camp that impressed you the most and why?

The place that impressed me the most at camp was the hike through the fiery furnace in Arches National Park.  I thought that it was awesome that all the cool arches and canyons there were formed only be water and wind.

Who inspired you the most during camp?

The people who inspired me the most was our river guides. They showed me how they could really have fun with their jobs and enjoy themselves. Their abilities to work hard and enjoy what they do has inspired me to be a river guide when I grow up.

Tell me about a time at camp when you saw someone else demonstrate great leadership qualities. What did they do?

Jacob demonstrated great leadership qualities by staying calm even when we were very stressed and concerned.

What did you do during camp that demonstrated your own leadership qualities?

The leadership skills I saw in myself was when I was able to teach people some of the material they didn't understand and when I was able to help out and contribute to the group.

In what ways did Earth Camp help you think about your future, e.g. careers or higher education?

When I grow up I want to be an engineer. I have decided that I want to design things to be better for the environment.  From my experiences in Earth Camp, I have learned that living sustainable withing the environment is very important, and it is what I want to pursue in my career.
