Sade's Story

Earth Camp Commitment

My Earth Camp commitment is to use a five bucket system at my house so that I can reuse as many things as possible. The system will include plastic flim, trash, recycling and composting. However, I do not have a composting system at home so I will learn how to create and manage one.

On the first day we watched a couple clips on how much waste that humans produce and how we can help to reduce the number. One of these ways was composting, which will help reduce the amount of pollution that enters the air.

Once I get back from Earth Camp I will purchase small trash cans with a lid (since the buckets can get pretty stinky) which will be labeled so that I can put the appropriate food or trash in the buckets. My mom will help me find a place to put the small trash cans.

The world will be different because I won’t throw away objects that can be composted or reused such as apple cores, plastic bottles, cans, paper, and chicken feed so that only trash will be thrown out. This will reduce the amount of energy needed to break down trash.

I will use my rafia bracelet to remind me to use my five bucket system. I will also put the buckets in an area where I can always see them.

Questions & Answers

What did you think camp would be like and did it turn out that way or differently?

I thought camp would be pretty relaxed and that it would go by really slow. However that was not the case. We were always on the move and had something to do or learn. This just made camp go by really fast and I am really sad that it is all coming to an end.

What was your favorite activity and why?

My favorite activity was at the beginning of camp when all the campers had to stand on a wooden plank and get in alphabetical order, without talking or touching the ground. It was really fun and got some of our first day awkwardness out of the way.

What did we do at camp that impressed you the most and why?

The thing that impressed me the most at Earth Camp was when we saw the CAP on the second day. It really made you realize how precious the water we use is and that we need to try our best to conserve it.

Who inspired you the most during camp?

Amy inspired me the most at Earth Camp because she always had a fantastic attitude and she would always be trying to help the world in every way that she can.

Tell me about a time at camp when you saw someone else demonstrate great leadership qualities. What did they do?

We had to get water packed up for the trip, so this person just got up and started to help without being asked. Even after the job was done they kept on asking what they could do to help.

What did you do during camp that demonstrated your own leadership qualities?

I always had a good attitude and would always help whenever it was needed. Also I helped explain certain activities that I had already done before to confused campers.

In what ways did Earth Camp help you think about your future, e.g. careers or higher education?

Earth camp helped me think about my future goals and the morals of life. I know about all the pollution we create and how much waste is produced. This will make me want to change the way I live in the future. Earth Camp has also made me interested in other careers such as becoming a river guide after high school.  This would be an exciting experience where I could learn more about the environment and myself.

Now that you have experienced Earth camp, how do you view water in Tucson and how will that affect your future actions and choices?

My new perspective on water in the west is that we have to do something about people's water use. This makes me want to do as much as I can to save water. I will take shorter showers, use harvested rain water and stop running water when I brush my teeth.
