Jackson's Story

Earth Camp Commitment

The motivation for my earth camp commitment was the 5 white buckets: Plastic Film, Recycling, Compost, Chicken Feed, and Trash. I was motivated because my family is getting chickens and we already compost so I thought instead of buying chicken feed I would make my own to feed them.

I plan on making my own chicken feed by mixing leftover food that is not going in the compost as well as some compostable food. Due to the fact that I’m a vegitarian it will be easier to sort food into compost and chicken feed.  My family already has a compost bin that we sort stuff into. My family will help me by making sure we fill the bucket so the chickens have food and reminds everyone that we need to fill it up.

I can not change the whole world, but my world will be better because I will be wasting less products. One of my friends who also has chickens might change his ways as well. In the overall scale, people might start learning ways to waste less food and resources.

The symbol I used was a chicken because having live chickens will be a constant reminder for me to give them their chicken feed. Having the buckets around will be also be a symbol. I know this works because it works the same with the compost buckets.

Questions & Answers

What was your favorite activity and why?

My favorite activity was the river rafting and going through rapids. This was because it was thrilling and exiting. It was also fun to jump off the boats and swim in the river.

What did we do at camp that impressed you the most and why?

The white water rapids really impressed me because of how powerful the water could be.  Where the debris flows would intrude into the river as a debris fan, the water would concentrate and accelerate, creating the fast flowing rapids.  There were many big rocks that we needed to navigate, which was exciting. It was also impressive to learn about the stars, and all the constellation stories of the ancient civilizations.

Who inspired you the most during camp?

I was inspired by two people during Earth Camp: Cristopher McCandless, the man in which the book/movie Into the Wild is about, and Aron Ralston the man that the movie 127 Hours and the book Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place were about. I was inspired by Cristopher McCandless because he loved the earth and wanted to see how he could live happily by walking around and just living in the wild with no end destination. I was inspired by Aron Ralston because he was hiking around where we were in Utah when he had his accident.

Tell me about a time at camp when you saw someone else demonstrate great leadership qualities. What did they do?

I saw leadership qualities in the "tech van" because when everyone was not working and messing up we remained calm and made sure that everything was fixed.  We were delegated a difficult task in processing all the photographs taken during camp.  Working together, we overcame some rough moments and finally finished with a great product.  I have learned a lot about my leadership capabilities from being part of the awesome tech van.

In what ways did Earth Camp help you think about your future, e.g. careers or higher education?

Earth Camp helped me think about what I want to do after high school because it made me want to make sure that whatever job I do that it helps me be eco-friendly and doesn’t waste a lot of resources.

Now that you have experienced Earth camp, how do you view water in Tucson and how will that affect your future actions and choices?

I understand clearly that human use of water has greatly reduced our supply and has changed the whole area.  The nature found in the southwest has made me want to use much less water and encourage other people to do so as well.
