Friday, April 19, 2024
Time: 8:00am-11am

Organization: Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
Description: Stinknet removal. Finishing off the infestation at Alamo and Lee. Pulling and bagging stinknet that we didn't get in the previous pulling and spraying days. Flat terrain, easy walking, lots of stooping and bending, maybe kneeling. Great opportunity to learn some of Tucson's other invasive plants too: new ones like Matthiola parviflora and groenbossie, and all the older unfavorites.
Meeting Location: Meet in the church parking lot on the NE Corner of Alamo and Lee.
Event location: 1631 North Alamo, Tucson, AZ
Volunteers: 6 registered out of a total capacity of 10
Tools Provided: small digging tools, trash bags, gloves,
Bring: a bucket if you have one, kneeling pad or knee pads maybe
Wear: Long sleeves, long pants, sturdy shoes, serious sun hat
Additional Information: Stinknet spreads like a contagion. It is spread mainly by vehicles and people walking/running. If established and widespread in Tucson, people will carry it to every hiking trail around Tucson too. We will go over sanitation protocols so that you don't take seeds back to your neighborhood. With the predicted temperatures, stinknet will run out of water and die very soon. And soon after, the seed heads become extremely fragile, to the point that it becomes very risky to try to bag them. We gotta hit it hard now while we still can.

Organization: Sonoran Desert Weedwackers - Pima County NRPR
Description: We will shift our focus today to removing stinknet from private property (with the property owner’s permission) near Tucson Mountain Park. This effort is time sensitive and will help protect the park from this new invasive plant! We won’t be hiking, but come prepared to work outside in full sun. Closed-toe shoes, long pants, and long sleeves are still recommended, as well as bringing sun protection and plenty of water. Because the smell of this plant is irritating to some, bringing your own mask is recommended.
