Bats of the Sonoran Desert Region

Did you know that there are almost 1000 different bat species in the world? That is almost one quarter of all mammal species! Bats have adapted to live in a wide variety of habitats and can be found on all continents except Antarctica.

Approximately 70 species of bats live in the Sonoran Desert region. Bats are an important part of our ecosystem, helping to keep populations of night-flying insects like mosquitos, in control. They also help disperse seeds and pollinate many plants we eat on a daily basis. They are fascinating animals that are often misunderstood. In order to learn more and to dispel myths about bats, scientists known as Bat Biologists spend their lives studying bats and their behavior.
