LIVE & (sort of) on the LOOSE!
A Look at Venomous Reptiles of the Southwest

This new live animal presentation is offered daily by the staff of the Herpetology department. These 30-45 minute programs take place every day under the Grasslands Ramada at 10:00 a.m. Time and location subject to change to accommodate the weather. So, be sure to check the museum's daily event board to confirm the time and location that this exciting new program will take place!

Though the museum has a long history of public programs interpreting animals; this is the first time that live rattlesnakes have been incorporated into them.

Each program presents two animals. The first will be a diamond-backed, Mohave or Black-tailed rattlesnake. At the discretion of the presenters, the second animal will either be a venomous lizard (Gila monster or Mexican beaded lizard), another rattlesnake species or a rear-fanged venomous snake (Night snake or Lyre snake).

Presentations focus on several topics, including general natural history, venoms and envenomations, bite statistics, rattlesnake translocation, how we work with and what it's like to work with venomous animals. We use the audience's interests and questions to determine the direction of each lecture. Questions are encouraged. In this manner, we can better serve the audience's needs, keep the programs fresh, exciting, and variable, along with making the programs more interactive.
