Desert Mysteries
Did you know that Arizona has a state mammal? Want to try your luck answering questions from the Wheel of Mystery? Maybe you'd rather dress up in a desert critter costume. These are just a few of the fun activities students can encounter as they help us solve mysteries about the plants and animals in our desert. All audiences will meet two live animals and see a brief slide show about the Sonoran Desert.
Program Objectives:
Through interactive demonstrations and observation of live animals, students will:
- Identify the Sonoran Desert as the desert in which we live. Older students should identify the United States and Mexico as the two countries in which the Sonoran Desert is located, as well as the two states within the U.S. where it is found.
- Define the five groups of Sonoran Desert animals that develop in eggs.
- Describe adaptations Sonoran Desert animals have for desert survival including how they find and eat their food, where they find shelter, and when they are active.
- Explain which habitats within the Sonoran Desert would be home to the animals they meet during the program.
- Describe ways that they can contribute to conservation and preservation of the Sonoran Desert.
