Creative Calligraphy: Looking Ahead - Janie Gildow, Instructor
Get creative with letters and words! The sky's the limit, and the more creative you are, the better it works. First take a look at contemporary work by modern-day calligraphers. You may be surprised—it isn't mechanical lettering created by candlelight in a monastery any more! So, to keep up with the times, you'll be encouraged to expand your horizons, experiment with letter styles that you design and create, work with metallic and pearlescent colors, add your own artwork, design your own unique signature, work on new and unique surfaces. You may choose to start a journal, design your own greeting cards, preserve in elegant lettering a favorite verse—or even a poem (or prose) that you write. The kind of pen you use doesn't matter—anything that makes a mark will do: calligraphy pen, ballpoint pen, marker, fountain pen (remember them?)—and yes, even a twig!
